The Shrine
The Shrine of Remembrance was constructed to commemorate the loss of lives in the First World War (1914 –18). Of the 89,000 Victorian ANZACs who served abroad, 19,000 lost their lives and were buried far from home at a time when most Australians did not travel overseas.
To protect the historic and cultural significance of the shrine, controls based on the original Shrine Vista were developed. These controls impose height and dimension limits and recommendations on any future development affecting the Shrine vista.
In 2014, the Victorian Government also implemented permanent and mandatory planning controls in the areas west and south west of the Shrine. Before any development can be proposed in these areas, Councils must receive certification of compliance to the Shrine Vista Controls from the licensed land surveyor nominated by the Shrine Trustees – Veris, our Melbourne office.
Veris play a considerable part in what the Victorian Government refers to as “managing the significance of the Shrine of Remembrance”. We take this role seriously and consider ourselves keepers of the Shrine. Along with the Shrine Trustees, Veris is duty bound to preserve the Shrine of Remembrance for future generations.
Services supplied to the Shrine of Remembrance by Veris include:
- Review and reporting to applicants and the Shrine Trustees
- Assessment of the property and the Shrine Vista controls in relation to the application site
- Development Design Assessment of proposed developments to confirm 3D compliance with The Shrine Vista Controls.
