Sydney Modern Project
The Art Gallery of New South Wales’s transformation – the Sydney Modern Project – will create a new art museum experience across two buildings connected by a public art garden. The $344 million project involves the construction of a new building, revitalisation of the existing Art Gallery building, and significant landscape works.
Veris has been engaged by the project builder, Richard Crookes Constructions, to provide a range of surveying services for the construction stage of the project, which is scheduled for completion in 2022.
Scope
Veris is providing the following scope of services:
- Structures Surveys (including core wall verticality)
- Engineering Surveys
- As-built Surveys
- Control Surveys
- Monitoring Surveys
- Concrete & Steel Set Out Surveys
- Underground Service Locating
- 3D Laser Scanning.
Project Highlights
Structural steel set-out
The project’s unique architectural design by Pritzker Prize-winning practice, SANAA, which comprises a series of interlinked steel-framed pavilions, required the precise installation of cast-in plates in difficult and hard to sight positions such as lift shafts and other major walls.
Overcoming the significant challenges of the positions, the Veris team worked meticulously to perform set-out surveys for the cast-in plates, and conducted additional checks post concrete pour, to ensure the required high level of accuracy. This has resulted in a perfect fit for the steel, with no reworks required.
In addition, Veris has performed the set-out of structural steel across all four different building positions at the site, which has tied together without issue and to a high level of accuracy.
At the peak of the project there were three surveyors on site.
Monitoring Surveys
Due to significant excavations taking place at the unique site, Veris performed monitoring surveys of the entire capping beam and piles. In addition, monitoring surveys of the external walls of the Eastern Distributor motorway and tunnel, which is in close proximity to the site, were conducted in case of any movement.
